J-38400Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover
Removal ProcedureWarning:Refer toBrake Dust Warning.
Raise and support the vehicle. Refer toLifting and Jacking the Vehicle.Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer toTire and Wheel Removal and Installation.Remove the rear brake rotor. Refer toRear Brake Rotor Replacement.Retract the park brake shoe adjuster to ease removal. RefertoParking Brake Adjustment.Using theJ-38400Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Removerremove the upper park brake shoe retainerspring-(1).
Remove the park brake shoe adjuster-(1).
While holding the rear park brake shoe hold down springpin-(1)-stationary, compress and rotate thehold down spring andcup-(2)-¼-turn.Remove the rear park brake shoe hold down spring assembly andthe pin.
While holding the front park brake shoe hold down springpin-(1)-stationary, compress and rotate thehold down spring andcup-(2)-¼-turn.Remove the front park brake shoe hold down spring assemblyand the pin.
Grasp the top of the park brake shoes and spread the shoesapart slightly.Remove the front park brake shoe-(1), rear parkbrake shoe-(2), and the lower retainingspring-(3)-from the parking brake anchorbacking plate.Separate the park brake shoe components.Clean the parking brake anchor backing plate with denaturedalcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.Installation ProcedureApply a light coat of high temperature brake lubricant to thepark brake shoe contact areas of the parking brake anchor backingplate.
Install the front park brake shoe-(1), rear parkbrake shoe-(2), and the lower retainingspring-(3)-to the parking brake anchorbacking plate.
While holding the front park brake shoe hold down springpin-(1)-stationary, compress and rotate thehold down spring andcup-(2)-¼-turn.
While holding the rear park brake shoe hold down springpin-(1)-stationary, compress and rotate thehold down spring andcup-(2)-¼-turn.
Install the park brake shoe adjuster-(1).Install the rear park brake shoe hold downspring-(1)-by compressing the spring androtating-¼-turn.
Using theJ-38400Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Removerinstall the upper park brake shoe retainerspring-(1).Adjust the park brake. Refer toParking Brake Adjustment.
